Nancy's story
From Kate Murphy (foster mom):
Nance (short for Nancy) is in foster care at our house. She is a healthy, happy, sweet girl. She is a pretty young lady with short hair and long legs. She is initially a little unsure of new situations but is easily coaxed. She rode in our car great to get home. She is doing fine with three other dogs of different sizes and ages. She doesn't mind the cats. She certainly has some puppy left in her and likes to run in our fenced in yard with a toy, having the time of her life! Being a typical young, medium sized dog, she'll need regular daily exercise- playing with another dog, jogging, hiking, walking would all be fine.
Nance is housebroken and walks fine on a leash. She seems to know her name and comes most of the time when I call her. She loves affection and my initial assessment is that she would do well in a number of settings.
You can e-mail and I would be happy to meet you at the shelter if you would like to meet her or if you have questions about her. I will be updating her pictures and antics on the HAHS facebook page.

Before you begin the adoption process, first think about what you want in a pet and whether you are ready to bring one into your life.
At HAHS, well help you find an animal companion whos just what youre looking for. Youll have a conversation with one of our adoption counselors about your preferences, your lifestyle, and your household so that we may guide you in choosing your new pet. Before you get started, be sure you can answer yes to these questions:
Do you live in a place where pets are welcome? (If you rent your home or land, you must have permission from your landlord to adopt a pet.)
Are you committed and able to care for an animal for his or her whole life, investing time and money into a new pet?
Are you committed and able to providing regular veterinary care for a new pet?
The Adoption Process:
Step 1.Browse our pets available for adoption on our website hornellanimalshelter.org, or visit our shelter and meet our animals in person. We require that the whole family come to the shelter to meet the pet you are considering. If youre adopting a dog and have a dog(s) currently living in your home, you will be required to bring your dog in for a meet and greet. You must provide proof that your dog(s) are current on their rabies, and distemper vaccines prior to setting up a meet and greet.
Step 2.Visit our shelter, or website hornellanimalshelter.org to fill out an adoption application. You can find the adoption application under the 'forms' tab on our website. Once the application is completed please submit it to us via email, fax, mail, or dropping it off to the shelter. Once we receive your application we can begin the approval process. **Please note that the approval process can take anywhere from 1 to 7 days depending on how soon we can reach your references, veterinarian, and landlord (if applicable)**
Step 3.Once youve been approved to adopt, youll pay an adoption fee  and in most cases you can bring home your new family member right away (provided the animal is of age for adoption)! In some cases, depending on the age, and status of the animal you have been approved for, the animal may be sent out on a foster to adopt with you. Typically this is done when an animal still needs to be spayed/ neutered, is not old enough to be spayed/ neutered yet, is on medication, or if you want to make sure the animal is going to be a perfect fit. If this is the case, then an adoption counselor will let you know the length of which the animal will be on foster to adopt, and when you will be able to finalize the adoption.
Congratulations!
